The Thinner Fraud: Why Cheap Epoxy is a Costly Mistake

If you’ve received a quote for epoxy resin floors that seems "too good to be true," it probably is. In the Australian flooring industry, there is a common shortcut known as "Thinning." What is Thinning?

Professional 100% solids epoxy is thick, honey-like, and challenging to apply. It requires expensive equipment and high-torque mixers. To save time and money, many installers add up to 20% All-Purpose Thinners or Xylene to the mix. This makes the epoxy "watery" and easy to roll on, but it compromises the integrity of your floor.

How Thinning Affects Your Floor:

Invisible Shrinkage: When the solvent evaporates, the floor shrinks. If an installer applies 1mm of thinned epoxy, you may only be left with 0.7mm of actual flooring. You are paying for a product that literally disappears into the air.

The "Pin-Hole" Problem: As solvents escape the resin, they leave behind microscopic "tunnels." This makes your floor porous, allowing oil and chemicals to seep in and eventually cause delamination.

Hot-Tire Failure: Thinned epoxy is brittle. When your car tires get hot from driving, they "grab" the thinned resin and pull it right off the concrete.

Toxic Exposure: Thinners release high levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). If your installer is using thinners, your house will smell like a chemical factory for days, posing a health risk to your household.
